Cybersecurity is one of the most welcoming on-ramps in tech if you take a structured path. The mistake most newcomers make is starting with offensive content (pentesting, CTFs) before building defensive foundations. Here is the structured version that actually leads to a paid role.
Build defensive foundations first
Networking, operating systems, and a structured intro like CompTIA Security+ are the cleanest starting points. You will be unhirable without these regardless of how good you are at hacking.
Pick your specialty
SOC analyst, GRC, cloud security, pentest, AppSec. Each has different interview loops and different learning paths.
Land the first role
Apply broadly to junior SOC, help-desk-with-security, and SOC analyst roles. The first job is usually less glamorous than expected — that is fine.
The bottom line
Pick a specialty, get one foundational cert, build a small home lab to show effort, and apply. Cybersecurity will reward you for being structured.
